im not looking to start a fight, but man does the montgomery county public library beat the pants off all others. i found two books i couldnt find in either the balt city or county library system, plus they have pimsleur for pretty much every language. whats even better, you can download any of these pimsleurs at anytime off their database. not to mention rosetta stone online and a mcpl exclusive language learning system similar to rosetta. so nice.
i dont think public libraries would exist today, had they not been started ages ago. i dont think people think that way anymore. pool money and resources to share - why not just go out and buy it for yourself? public libraries come off as low brow these days, but they are such a good and simple example of sustainability, cooperation, culture, and community...everything the hip new sustainable trend touts. people are forced to come to common space, share, and interact.
makes you wonder what other cooperative ventures we are missing out on.

MCPL you can look up any book and have it shipped to which ever library you want in the system if it is available. You can put holds and renew your books... all online! Basically it owns- and I am looking for a fight.
I once worked on a show that shot a segment at the big old library in Baltimore. I thought it was a nice library. They had tons of old rare books and Baltimore relics. You have to ask to see those things, but they are super nice and informative when they do show it to you. Try it out.
thats true. and they have a really nice collection of old maps that you can hold too.
music and movies - start a free cooperative music/movie library.
i like libraries, but I don't go often enough.
Dana- you can borrow movies and music at the public library, it's just not necessarily all the new releases.
I used to always find boogers in publilc library books.
