i think the last fiction i read was hitchiker's guide to the galaxy. nothing against harry potter, im sure its great i just dont want to read it right now. something with a similar, swallow your life - kind of feel would do well though.
yes it may suggests escapism, but i want something that will transport me. i've been stressed this week (as short as it is) with work and with trying to start new work and with overdue library books and incomplete bikes and blah blah blah.
maybe ill go back and read some old ray bradbury. i would like something with dinosaurs or secret islands or magic or..... any recommendations?

harry potter is definitely swallow your life kind of stuff! and it's about magic! you would like it. who cares if it's popular.
id rather read them after all the movies are out. although i guess it wouldnt be so bad to read 6 and 7.
Joel, I was just thinking, "He should read Harry Potter", right before I read you did not want to.
Harry Potter is that for me- no question. I also enjoy some J.D. Salindger.
I suggest reading Bethel Merriday by Sinclair Lewis. It is one of my fav books ever. It has a soap opera like quality that sucks you in...
Harry Potter!
Hahaha! But seriously. That takes me away to Neverland.
If you can't go for that...? I LOVE Kimgsolver's Poisonwood Bible. Have you read it? It doesn't have dinosaurs in it, but its got mystic and moral engagement. It's about a Christian missionary family in the Congo in the 60's.
I just started The Pillars of the Earth. It seems very good so far.
If you find something good let me know...
For some reason, I got it in my head that I had clicked on the link to Anna's blog--I was still thinking that as I read through your latest post. I read it in the voice of Anna--or her voice (mannerisms, ponderings, and personality) as it plays out in my memory. You guys are both exceptionally smart, so it did not seem entirely unlike her, except for the fact that I was confused that she suddenly had a job in July. Anyway, i went to the next post and thought it was interesting that she had posted pictures from camping, and that the last one was a close up of you in a doo-rag type garment. I started to get skeptical, and then my eyes scanned over Peter Hafer, and i thought WTF. whos blog IS this?! and how did I get here?!!! Then i remembered, a while back, i received a blog post from peter hafer, and I thought a random dude had posted on my blog, until I discovered peter hafer is joel blaine and this is his blog. Well done.
It has been a few days now since you have posted this--I sincerely hope your stress has subsided and you are treading lightly again. I read a few children's books this past week. Nothing helps easy digestion like a story about a tiny bunny who believes sincerely he can bounce on clouds.
I have missed you. Let's catch up soon.
Additionally, I agree with Monica--Poisonwood is a solid read. Beautiful, smart writing.
hahaha there are so many reasons that post would NOT be mine, the least of which being that I cannot bring myself to not capitalize the word I
