circular thinking

i always thought that many of the songs in the postal service album, "give up" were interelated, but i never saw the complete connection. the other night i sat down and listed the order i thought the songs would fall chronologically as a part of a story. it was also a nice little discussion with the housemates.

im guessing that the author had recently been rejected by a girl. after being rejected he goes into a sort of denial and escape from the whole thing. as he reminesces (with a revisionist's perspective) he hesitantly pursues her at first, and then dives into full fledged wooing. after a flight from washington state to dc to visit his distanced love and honest conversation, he is able to see the picture more clearly and understands that he in fact was the "one worth leaving". so heres the order.

prologue: rejection

we will become silhouettes
this place is a prison
sleeping in
such great heights
natural anthem
brand new colony
clark gable
recycle air
nothing better
the district sleeps alone tonight

and tying it all together, the title: give up

im sure you had it figured out upon first listening, im just a little slow. the order is easily debatable, so whats your take?

if you need a refresher, check out the lyrics: http://www.azlyrics.com/p/postalservice.html

don't wake me, i plan on sleeping.

i like the fact that he eventually comes to terms with things. i think maybe instead of being titled "give up" it should be "wake up".
