hate to admit it, but i actually enjoyed the movie "freedom writers" tonight. ok, so maybe hate is a little strong, but you know what i mean. "dangerous minds ii", "half-nelson was better", or "white teacher saves impoverished minorties, again" all seemed like more fitting titles after viewing the trailer, but i was engaged by the film none the less.

there weren't any major deviations from your standard rise above-highschool story, and that didnt really suprise me. so what was so engaging about this story among others? maybe i can quickly suspend my disbelief for the prospect of feeling like its actually possible to "make a difference". maybe i like the notion that its ok to be idealistic under the pretense that you know you are idealistic, and can still continue when your layered idealism tumbles (that doesn't make sense). maybe i liked the not so negative portrayal of the pragmatics, post-idealists, and the "this isn't my battle" crowd. maybe im just a sucker for 'based on a true story' hollywood laminated movies.

im not completely sure why i liked it, but thats ok.

p.s. i think its shameful how little i know about doctor king and the civil rights movement...any reading recommends?

i also liked it, maybe it was similar to the dangerous minds genre movies, but it still makes you ask questions and it made me think, which is what i liked about it.

i'm still hung up with the husband's character. his lack of drive and motivation, his settling in, his view of himself and his attitude towards swank.
